“Kids Against Hunger” Games at Middle School Raise Over $1,000

It that time of year again, when Manchester Key Club and Builders Club enlist the aid of the entire student body to raise money in support of the annual Kids Against Hunger project. Based on the amount of money raised a food packaging event will be held at Klager Elementary School where kindergarten through 4^th graders will work to pack meals for hungry children in Michigan and around the world. And on June 4^th, under the supervision of the High School Key Clubbers and Middle School Builders Clubbers the elementary students will package nearly 20,000 meals .

Manchester Middle School Builders Club hosted a “Kids Against Hunger” Games on April 25 where they raised nearly $1100.00. These games, based on the popular Hunger Games books and movies, encouraged student to purchase tickets to compete in the various activities and raffles.

“Mrs. Spickard, the Middle School principal, and the faculty were so supportive and helped to make this fun day for students a big success,” said Builders Club Advisor Cindy Kenney. “Our goal for the Middle School was to raise $1,000 for Kids Against Hunger and we exceeded our expectations. The kids were great and I think they really felt good about helping other children in need.”

The elementary and high school each have a goal to raise $1,000 as well. Klager Elementary will be hosting a coin drive from May 5^th -16^th. High School Key Clubbers will also be hosting a fundraising competition between classrooms based on their teacher alma maters. The teachers with the lowest amount collected will have to wear the colors of their college rivals. “We hope to raise over $4,500 from all sources, and if we do, we will be able to package over 20,000 meals,” Kenney says.

The Kids Against Hunger Coalition brings the food packaging event to Klager School and sets up an assembly line style series of work stations for the kids to work from. The students measure the components of the meal, package them and vacuum seal them for shipment. All of the students get an opportunity to participate in the process.

Any donations to the Kids Against Hunger program are welcome and can be made through the school collections or the Kiwanis Club.

Kids Against Hunger is a 501(3)(c) organization founded in 1999 that has been providing highly nutritious, life-saving meals to starving children in developing countries and the United States. They accomplish this by mobilizing the caring of American children, teens and adults on behalf of hungry children around the world.
