Letter to the Editor: When considering wellness, explore your inner toddler

May 12, 2016
Dear Manchester,
It is likely that your top priority today, isn鈥檛 your long-term health.
Assuming that true, and for most of us it is, here something we鈥檇 like you to try. It so simple even a toddler can do it. And most of them do. Ask yourself:
Why should I care about being well?
Don鈥檛 settle for the first answer 鈥 which will probably be something like 鈥淚 want to live a long time.鈥 Or 鈥淚 want to feel good.鈥 Dig a little deeper. Like a toddler.
Here are some examples to give you an idea.
Why should I care about wellness?
Because at my age if I don鈥檛 make an effort to stay healthy things go downhill quickly.
Why?
That just how it is. And I don鈥檛 like the feeling of getting old.
Why?
My family and friends are fun and I don鈥檛 want to be left out.
Why should I care about wellness?
Because I need to set an example for my kids.
Why?
I am responsible for teaching them how to live.
Why?
I accepted that responsibility when I decided to have children.
Why?
Family is the most important thing. I want the best for my family.
Why should I care about wellness?
I want to look and feel good.
Why?
When I feel fit and look good in my clothes I am confident. That a great feeling.
Take as many 鈥榳hys鈥 as you need 鈥 the last answer is the revelation. You will know when you hit that kernel of what really matters to you. If you鈥檙e a parent you probably won鈥檛 stop at 鈥淚鈥檓 responsible for the family.鈥 It won鈥檛 be satisfying enough. Find the answer that feels satisfying for you.
We hope you have a little fun exploring your inner toddler.
