Former Sheriff deputy and social worker launches 2024 campaign for Washtenaw County Sheriff

Last week, Alyshia Dyer formally launched her 2024 campaign for Sheriff in Washtenaw County. Dyer, a University of Michigan–trained social worker who spent 10 years as a deputy sheriff in Washtenaw, held a virtual launch party attended by more than 50 community members, local officials, and supporters. In honor of Women History Month, the event included an all-women line-up featuring leaders in law enforcement, community activists, and elected officials.

Speakers included local leaders such as Ypsilanti Councilmembers MeChelle King and Desirae Simmons, as well as national leaders such as Sheriff Susan Hutson of New Orleans and retired Police Lt. Diane Goldstein, a well-known criminal justice and drug policy reformer. Speakers highlighted Dyer history of community service and her unique ability to build coalitions across traditional lines.

“Communities need a new voice and we are tired of the same old rhetoric,” said Ken Nixon, Executive Director of Safe & Just Michigan and someone who was wrongfully convicted then exonerated. Local activist Trische’ Duckworth solidified her support for Dyer, saying, “We need people who aren’t just community minded, but community driven.” City Councilmember King spoke about how much she trusts Dyer and how important her experience working in law enforcement is.

During the launch, Dyer outlined her vision for the Washtenaw County Sheriff Office, emphasizing the importance of community policing, transparency, and accountability, as well as providing additional training and mental health and wellness services for officers at risk of burnout.

“We live in a county where someone ZIP code defines opportunity, and law enforcement plays a role in that. We have to be intentional and honest about accountability, transparency, and implementing true systemic change in our local legal system so we can work to build thriving communities for all, not just a few,” Dyer said.
