Title 1 Summer School ends strong!

The children continued to be focused and strong learners during the last week of summer school.听While the reading, writing, and math interventions came to their conclusions, the children continued to enjoy the generosity of the businesses in the Manchester community during their field trips throughout the week.
On Monday, the children hands-on trip took them to Andrews Chiropractic.听Dr. Andrews taught them about balance in the body, like looking for balance between ears and shoulders.听They had the opportunity to look at X-rays and even participated in giving an adjustment to a 鈥減atient.鈥 On the way back, the skies opened and poured for the first time during a field trip walk.听The teachers and children would like to extend a HUGE 鈥淭hank You!鈥 to Drew and Joyce, who welcomed the children onto their porch during the storm!
On Tuesday the children enjoyed their final trip to the library. They were thrilled when youth librarian Abigail Lebouitz took them to see the 鈥渦pstairs鈥 of the library, where they learned where to find the DVDs, graphic novels and teen books, the computers, and the entrancing solar system lamp. The children were treated with popsicles for their final trip home.
The children made their way to Ollie for the long-awaited trip to learn how pizza is made on Wednesday. Managers Ryan and Jane Lentz were encouraging math teachers, quizzing the children with math problems related to pizza and restaurants.听The children learned about the process of making pizza and even received a tour of the restaurant and kitchen. At the end of the tour, the children were treated to a slice of pizza and water.
Thursday brought cooler weather and a delightful trip to Dragonfly and Birch.听The owner, Merrill Guerra, explained to the children how fudge is made in the back of the kitchen and demonstrated the science and chemistry of tea.听She also taught the children about the Michigan authors she carries in her store.听At the end of the trip, the children received goody bags as a special reminder of the store.
Friday the children took their final field trip to the Manchester Eye Care Center.听The engaging tour was led by Kay Snow, Meghan Bennett, and Nicole Vinton. They taught the children about the different machines that are used to measure their eyes and determine whether or not they need glasses. They got to touch each of the machines and even had the opportunity to see what it was like to sit in the exam chair.
The last four weeks have been an incredible opportunity for real-world learning for the children in Title 1 Summer School.听The summer school team wishes to pass on its deep gratitude to the 17 incredible businesses that opened their doors to teach the children the importance of life-long learning.听And an extra big thank you to the Manchester Mirror team, who made the dream of published student writing a reality for our young journalists!

First at Ollie Pizza we got a look at how to make a pizza.听We got a tour of the kitchen and the freezer.听Next, we left the kitchen to go to the bar and tables room.听Next, we got PIZZA!听And seven kids and a teacher left to get the newspaper. Then we left.

First, we went in the kitchen.听Next, I saw a lot of stuff.听Third I saw a plant.听Fourth I saw different tea. Last I saw a hummingbird. I saw a lot of people.听I saw coloring pencils.听I saw more people.听I smelled tea. I saw the tea change color. We got to touch things.听I touched more stuff.

Manchester Eye Care Center

Manchester Eye Care Center had a lot of machines for eyes.听There were a lot of glasses there and sunglasses. She let us try one machine.听There was a hot air balloon on the screen.听It was sometimes blurry and sometimes clear. The three ladies were very nice to me. When I raised my hand, they gladly answered it.听They also look for diseases in your eye.听When you鈥檙e getting glasses, they measure your eyes.听Now you know that there are not just glasses at the Manchester Eye Care Center.听The eye care center was a wonderful place.

They showed us the room that they get glasses.听I have glasses but I never wear them.听There was a lot of glasses.听It was so, so cool. This year I am getting glasses. We learned about eye infections and how they do math.
